Walking in the area of Mannings Heath, Handcross, Pease Pottage, and St Leonard's Forest offers a peaceful yet varied experience through the gentle hills and ancient woodlands of West Sussex. This area sits within the High Weald National Landscape (formerly AONB), characterised by rolling countryside, deep sandstone ghylls, and rich biodiversity. Walkers can explore parts of the High Weald Landscape Trail, a named footpath offering sweeping views, historic hamlets, and access to the lush expanses of St Leonard's Forest. The forest itself is steeped in legend and provides woodland trails rich with bluebells in spring, as well as occasional hill walks that offer glimpses across the Weald.
The region is dotted with heritage attractions, including Nymans near Handcross – a National Trust property with romantic ruins, ornate gardens, and woodland walks leading into the wider countryside. Nearby Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens offer tranquil landscaped trails and valley walks. Though there are no major rivers, several streams and wooded brooks criss-cross the area, enhancing the forested charm. Remnants of disused railway lines and old brick viaducts, like the Ouse Valley Viaduct to the east, recall the area’s Victorian transport heritage. The rural tranquillity and natural richness make this area perfect for relaxing, varied walks.
