Walking on Islay in the Bowmore, Bridgend and Laggan Point area includes the Laggan Point Circuit from Bowmore is a splendid coastal route of approximately 14 km (8.7 miles), popular with families and bird-watchers alike. Starting at Bowmore – famous for its round church and Bowmore Distillery – the trail heads through farmland and along the sea shore to Laggan Point, with sweeping views of Loch Indaal and the sandy expanse of the "Big Strand". The path is largely flat and easy underfoot, though it includes a stint along a minor road, and finishes with a return along the same picturesque coastal corridor. Wildlife lovers may spot waders, seals, and seabirds, especially around the estuary marshes near Bridgend.
In Bridgend, just north of Bowmore, there are tranquil riverside paths alongside the River Sorn, winding through reedbeds and saltmarsh – part of the internationally significant Bridgend Flats SSSI. The hamlet provides a gateway to woodland walks toward Islay House and the nearby loch shores. The area also links to other circular walks such as the Bridgend Woods loop (around 6 km), passing the historic Islay Woollen Mill and offering peaceful woodland terrain. The combination of sea views, marshland wildlife, and island heritage – distillery architecture, crofting ruins, and ancient glens – makes this region a richly rewarding walking destination.
