The Devil’s Punch Bowl is deep and circular natural depression that resembles a large punch bowl. The name is rooted in local folklore and legend. One story suggests that the bowl was created by the Devil himself in a fit of anger. According to this legend, the Devil was annoyed by the numerous churches being built in Sussex, so he scooped up a large handful of earth to throw at them, creating the Punch Bowl. However, he missed his target and the earth fell, forming the large hollow we see today.

Another interpretation is that the name reflects the dramatic and eerie appearance of the landscape, which seemed otherworldly to the people who lived in the area. The steep sides and unusual shape of the valley, along with the area's often misty conditions, could have contributed to the association with the Devil and his mythical activities.
