Peddars Way Map 1: Knettishall Heath to Castle Acre Walking Map

This is the first in a series of two high-resolution Peddars Way maps, covering the Peddars Way Route which runs for 46 miles from Knettishall Heath to Holme-next-the-Sea. Created with OS 1:25 000 data enhanced to 1:16 000, these laminated maps are easy to read and VERY easy to use in the field.

This Peddars Way map starts in Knettishall Heath and finishes in Castle Acre, an approximate distance of 26 miles. Leaving Knettishall Heath, you traverse ancient woodlands and open heathlands. The route follows a Roman road, showcasing remnants of Roman engineering. As you progress, you pass the picturesque village of Thompson, home to Thompson Water, a tranquil nature reserve and then through charming villages like Little Cressingham, with its historical church and headless windmill . Further along, you encounter the impressive ruins of Castle Acre Priory, a Cluniac monastery founded in 1090. The village of Castle Acre itself boasts a rich medieval history, with well-preserved castle remains and a beautiful Bailey Gate. This section of the Peddars Way is not only a walk through scenic landscapes but also a journey through centuries of English history.
