The area stretching from Princetown to Postbridge in Dartmoor offers some of the most scenic and varied walking experiences in the South West. Well-known footpaths like the Two Moors Way and Dartmoor Way pass through or nearby, offering hill walks across open moorland with panoramic views. Walkers can explore the rugged terrain of Longaford Tor and Bellever Tor, both offering sweeping vistas across Dartmoor. The River Dart winds gracefully through the area, creating ideal river walk opportunities, particularly through Bellever Forest, where waymarked trails take you past ancient woodland and Bronze Age settlements. Between the two villages lies Wistman’s Wood, a mysterious, moss-draped oak woodland steeped in myth and a must-see for nature lovers and folklore enthusiasts alike.
The area is rich in heritage attractions, with remnants of Dartmoor’s industrial past, including the Princetown Railway Line, now a popular walking and cycling route. This former railway trackbed features old bridges and viaducts, offering glimpses into the region’s Victorian-era engineering. Nearby, the imposing Dartmoor Prison looms over Princetown, complete with a museum recounting its notorious history. While there are no coastal features in this inland part of Dartmoor, its deep historical character is embodied in ancient clapper bridges like the one at Postbridge, and the ruins of medieval farmsteads and tenements that dot the moor.
