Walking in Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck offers some of the most breath-taking coastal and countryside scenery in Dorset. The area is home to a stunning section of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and geological wonders. The South West Coast Path runs through Swanage, leading walkers along the limestone cliffs towards Old Harry Rocks, an iconic chalk formation offering spectacular sea views. Heading west, the path continues past Durlston Country Park, where wildflower meadows, seabird colonies, and the historic Durlston Castle make for a fascinating walk. Further along, rugged coastal trails take in Dancing Ledge, a former quarry site now popular with climbers, and continue toward Chapman’s Pool, a secluded bay surrounded by towering cliffs.
Inland, the Isle of Purbeck boasts rolling hills, heathlands, and picturesque villages. A walk from Swanage inland can lead to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin set dramatically on a hill, with panoramic views over Purbeck Hills and the surrounding countryside. The Purbeck Way crosses from Old Harry Rocks to Corfe Castle and St Aldhelm’s Chapel on the cliffs close to Worth Matravers deserves a visit.
