The North Downs Way and Pilgrims Way are two intertwined historic and scenic walking routes that traverse the picturesque landscapes of Kent and Surrey. The North Downs Way, a National Trail established in 1978, stretches approximately 153 miles from Farnham in Surrey to Dover in Kent. This well-marked path follows the ridge of the North Downs, offering walkers stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
The North Downs Way Trail passes several notable landmarks, including Leeds Castle, the ruins of Waverley Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral and finishes with the striking White Cliffs of Dover. Along the way it crosses areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), including the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs.
Running alongside parts of the North Downs Way is the ancient Pilgrims Way. This route has been used since the early medieval times by pilgrims travelling to Canterbury, the final resting place of the martyred Thomas Becket. The Pilgrims Way primarily follows older tracks and pathways, many of which have been used since prehistoric times.
